How One Step Ahead Works

Most security setups have a hidden weakness — one password, one device, one backup that if lost takes everything with it. One Step Ahead removes that weakness without making recovery complicated.

The Core Idea

Don't keep one copy of something irreplaceable. Split it. Store the pieces separately. Recover with any two.

The problem with one copy

Whether it is a seed phrase written on paper, a password saved in an app, or a document stored on one device — a single copy is a single point of failure. One fire, one theft, one forgotten password, and it is gone.

Cloud backups solve the loss problem but introduce a new one — a breach, a shutdown, or an account lockout can expose or permanently cut off access to everything at once.

The solution

One Step Ahead encrypts your data and splits it into 3 independent fragments. You need any 2 out of 3 to recover. Store them separately — different devices, different locations, different people — and no single event can take everything.

Three separate storage locations

Step by Step

Open the app. Follow five steps. Your data is protected.

1
Choose what to protect

Choose what to protect

Open One Step Ahead and choose your data type — a seed phrase, a login, plain text, an image, or a PDF. The app guides you through entering or uploading it.

2
The app encrypts your data

The app encrypts it

Your data is encrypted on your device using a strong random key. Nothing leaves the app. Nothing touches the internet. The encryption happens in memory and the key is never stored in full anywhere.

3
Smart Split creates 3 fragments

Smart Split creates 3 fragments

The encrypted data and a portion of the key are combined into 3 separate fragments — as QR codes or files. Each fragment holds the full encrypted data but only part of the key. No single fragment can decrypt on its own.

4
Distribute the 3 fragments

Distribute the 3 fragments

Store each fragment somewhere different. Print and seal them in envelopes. Save to separate devices. Give one to a trusted person. The separation is what creates resilience — no single location holds enough to decrypt.

5
Recover with any 2 fragments

Recover with any 2 fragments

When you need to recover, open the app and scan or load any 2 of the 3 fragments. The app reconstructs your data instantly. Order does not matter. No internet. No account. No waiting.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

One Step Ahead is designed for real-world situations.

One fragment is lost

Nothing changes. You still have 2 out of 3. Recover your data, then create a new set of fragments to replace the lost one.

One fragment is stolen

The thief has encrypted data and only part of the key. Without a second fragment they cannot decrypt anything. Act quickly — recover and rotate your credentials.

One device is destroyed

If a fragment was on that device, you still have 2 elsewhere. Recover, then redistribute a new set of fragments from the recovered data.

The app disappears

The reconstruction method is publicly documented. Anyone can build a recovery tool from the White Paper spec. One Step Ahead is never a single point of failure.

You forget which fragments match

Each fragment contains a short identifier. The app detects mismatched fragments and tells you immediately — no silent failures.

You lose all 3 fragments

This is the one scenario One Step Ahead cannot recover from. Store your fragments carefully. Three separate locations means three things would all need to fail at once.

Common Questions

Is the app free?

Yes. One Step Ahead is free to download from the App Store for both macOS and iOS. No subscription, no in-app purchase, no account required.

Does it connect to the internet?

Never. One Step Ahead is entirely offline. It does not send data anywhere, does not require a network connection, and contains no third-party analytics or tracking.

What data types can I protect?

Cryptocurrency seed phrases (BIP-39), login credentials, plain text, images (JPG and PNG), and PDF documents.

What happens if I lose one fragment?

Nothing critical. You need any 2 out of 3 to recover. Losing one fragment does not expose your data or prevent recovery — as long as you still have the other two.

Can I recover without the app?

Yes. The full reconstruction method is published in the White Paper. Any developer can build a recovery tool from the public specification.

How is this different from a password manager?

A password manager stores your data in one place — usually encrypted, usually in the cloud. One Step Ahead splits your data so there is no single place to attack, breach, or lose. It works entirely offline and requires no account.

Is the encryption strong?

Yes. One Step Ahead uses AES-256-GCM — the same encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide. Every encryption operation uses a unique random key that is never stored in full anywhere. Full details are in the Security Architecture.

Which devices are supported?

macOS and iOS. Minimum iOS 17. The app is a universal purchase — one download covers both platforms.

Ready to eliminate your single point of failure?

Free to download. No account. No internet. Works on macOS and iOS.
