Protecting your seed phrase should be the first thing you learn when you enter the crypto space. In this article, we aim to explain how you can safeguard your mnemonic phrase without having to purchase expensive metal devices while still benefiting from the durability they offer.
If you find our printing solution insufficiently persistent, we would like to introduce you to a very affordable and authentic method that will cost you no more than $20. With this method, you can still utilize highly durable materials such as metals, ceramics, and more.
What do you need to know?
Before we delve into the solution, it’s important to be aware of some critical key points about protecting your seed.
- Most buildings burn at temperatures ranging from 800–1000°C (1500–1800°F). In the event of a fire, you will likely not be permitted to enter the remains to search for your keys.
- Using a passphrase as an additional layer of protection can be risky. It’s crucial to understand its limitations and educate yourself on how to properly use it. Many people have lost funds due to mishandling passphrases
- Never disclose to anyone that you possess cryptocurrencies, particularly refrain from announcing it on social media or in the presence of unfamiliar individuals. Doing so makes you an easy target for thieves.
Is a permanent marker sufficient?
You might be surprised to know that in most cases, a good permanent marker can do the job. But how?
The optimal method involves acquiring stainless steel plates, ideally in a credit card size, and using high-temperature-resistant markers. It’s worth noting that such markers do exist, and certain varieties can withstand temperatures as high as 1100°C (2000°F).
We conducted an experiment using the Dykem High-Temp 44 black marker on a heated stainless steel plate, reaching temperatures of 1000°C (1800°F). While the plate slowly bent and glowed, the information remained visible. This should be sufficient for anyone seeking an inexpensive method to protect their seeds.
Please note that we recommend purchasing the Dykem High-Temp 44 marker in black color, as it offers the highest temperature resistance compared to other available colors. How do we recommend it?
Obtain three stainless steel plates. Utilize our 3 by 2 method to split the mnemonic phrase. Write down the split phrases on the plates using Dykem High Temp 44 marker. You can make use of both sides of the plates.
To help you split the words, make use of our One Step Ahead application. Simply enter the seed phrase, and the application will automatically divide it into three parts. Preview your mnemonic phrase and transfer it to the plates.
Below is a simple pictogram illustrating the process.
Alternatively, you have the option to use our template file to assist you in splitting the seed phrase without relying on the application. You can download the template file from the following link: 12-word template or 24-word template
Distribute each plate to three different secured locations. Only disclose the location to the person you trust the most, such as your partner, child, mother, etc. Choose locations that offer easy and instant access. Place the plates in a paper envelope and seal it. This way, if the envelope is compromised, you can detect it and take immediate action. Avoid using plastic envelopes, as they can react with the marker paint and potentially damage the information during a fire.
